🫒 Homer Called It ‘Liquid Gold’ — Here’s Why
Ancient Greeks used olive oil in its purest form for softer, shinier hair and to fight the early signs of ageing. Homer himself referred to olive oil as “Liquid Gold” — and for good reason. Olive oil contains four major antioxidants, including Vitamins A and E, which allow it to work as a natural protector, moisturiser, and cleanser all in one.

Olive oil soap cleanses the skin without stripping its natural oils, so it won’t leave skin dry or tight. Its natural texture allows pores to breathe while protecting skin cells at the same time — a balance that synthetic detergents simply cannot replicate.
Our olive oil is organic, extra virgin, imported directly from a friend’s olive farm in Greece — and it won the 2018 GOLD Medal at the NY International Olive Oil Competition. It is the foundation of every bar we make.
🔬 The Skin Science Behind Olive Oil Soap
Greek olive oil soap is rich in Vitamin E, beta carotene, and Vitamin A. As an antioxidant powerhouse, it supports new cell generation and can help promote younger-looking skin by improving elasticity. Here’s what the science shows:
| Benefit | How Olive Oil Delivers It | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Deep moisturising | Oleic acid penetrates skin layers and locks in hydration | Dry & mature skin |
| Antioxidant protection | Vitamins A & E neutralise free radicals | Anti-ageing, all skin types |
| Gentle cleansing | Saponified olive oil lifts dirt without stripping natural oils | Sensitive & eczema-prone skin |
| Skin barrier support | Squalene (naturally in olive oil) mimics skin’s own lipids | Reactive & compromised skin |
| Anti-inflammatory | Oleocanthal in olive oil has ibuprofen-like properties | Psoriasis, rosacea, eczema |
| Gentle exfoliation | Naturally retained glycerin softens and lifts dead cells | Dull or congested skin |
Pure Greek olive oil soap is generally recommended for all skin types — including those with eczema, psoriasis, and sensitivity — as it is far less likely to cause reactions than synthetic alternatives. Many dermatologists and skin specialists consider it the best soap in the world.

⏳ Why Cold-Process Curing Makes All the Difference
Not all olive oil soaps are created equal. The method of production — and the patience of the maker — determines the final quality of the bar. At Grandma’s All Natural Soap, every bar is made using the cold-process method and cured for a minimum of 2 months, with our aged bars curing for up to 2 years.
Why does curing matter so much? Two critical things happen during the cure:
- Saponification completes. When oils and lye combine, a chemical reaction called saponification begins — but it doesn’t finish the moment the soap is poured. Curing gives this reaction time to complete fully, ensuring the bar is safe, mild, and free of any unreacted lye.
- Water evaporates. Fresh cold-process soap contains 25–38% water. As that water leaves the bar during curing, the soap becomes harder, denser, and dramatically longer-lasting. An uncured bar dissolves in days; a properly cured bar lasts weeks.
| Soap Type | Minimum Cure | Our Recommended Cure | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard cold-process | 4 weeks | 8–10 weeks | Hard, mild, long-lasting bar |
| High-olive (Castile) | 6 months | 12+ months | Silky, conditioning lather |
| Aged Limited Edition | 6 months | 1–2 years | Exceptional hardness & luxury feel |

The result of a proper cure: a bar with a firm crystal structure, a creamy lather, a milder pH, and a shelf life measured in years. This is the artisan difference — and it’s why our soaps feel unlike anything you’ll find on a supermarket shelf.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Greek olive oil soap considered the best in the world?
Greek olive oil — particularly extra virgin varieties from regions like Crete and the Peloponnese — has among the highest oleic acid and antioxidant content of any olive oil globally. Combined with traditional cold-process handcrafting and long cure times, Greek olive oil soap delivers unmatched moisturising, protective, and cleansing properties.
Is olive oil soap good for eczema and psoriasis?
Yes. Olive oil’s anti-inflammatory properties (from oleocanthal) and its ability to cleanse without stripping natural oils make it one of the most recommended soaps for eczema and psoriasis sufferers. Many of our customers with chronic skin conditions report significant improvement after switching to our Greek olive oil bars.
Can I use olive oil soap on my face?
Absolutely. Our pure olive oil bars are gentle enough for facial use and are especially beneficial for dry, sensitive, or mature facial skin. We recommend our Unscented Greek Olive Oil Soap for facial use as it contains no added fragrance.
Can I use olive oil soap on my hair?
Yes — many of our customers use our Mint & Rosemary Olive Oil Soap as a shampoo bar. Olive oil strengthens hair, and rosemary is traditionally used to stimulate scalp circulation and promote hair growth. It’s a natural, chemical-free alternative to commercial shampoos.
Why does cold-process soap need to cure for weeks?
Cold-process soap is made by combining oils and lye (sodium hydroxide) in a reaction called saponification. This reaction doesn’t complete the moment the soap is poured — it needs weeks to finish fully. During curing, two things happen: the saponification reaction completes (making the bar safe and mild), and excess water evaporates (making the bar hard and long-lasting). A properly cured bar is dramatically milder, harder, and longer-lasting than an uncured one.
What makes your Aged Limited Edition bars different?
Our Aged Limited Edition bars cure for 1 to 2 years — far beyond the standard 6–8 weeks. This extended cure produces an exceptionally hard, dense bar with a refined, silky lather and a shelf life measured in years. Think of it like the difference between a young wine and a vintage — patience transforms the product entirely.
Is your olive oil soap safe for babies?
Yes. Our pure olive oil bars are ideal for bathing babies and washing baby clothes because of their completely natural, fragrance-free formulation. We recommend our Unscented Greek Olive Oil Soap for the most sensitive baby skin.
Are your soaps cruelty-free?
Yes. Grandma’s All Natural Soap is 100% cruelty-free. We never test on animals and use only ethically sourced botanical and agricultural ingredients.
