Lemon Essential Oil Skin Benefits
Essential oils are essences taken from plants for their healing properties. The essential oil of lemon has a refreshing scent of citrus that wakes you up. Additionally, this type of essential oil has benefits for healthy skin and for a number of skin conditions. Consult a certified aromatherapist before using lemon essential oil on your skin.
Properties
Like many essential oils, lemon oil contains antibacterial properties, which is partly the reason that it improves skin conditions such as acne. A study by Seenivasan Prabuseenivasan and colleagues published in November 2006 in "BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine" found that lemon essential oil greatly suppressed tested bacteria strains. Lemon essential oil is also astringent.

Benefits
Lemon essential oil is commonly used for various skin conditions. The antibacterial effects treat cuts and wounds on the skin so they can heal. Lemon essential oil soothes itchiness caused by bug bites. It relieves eczema and similar skin conditions and improves signs of aging on the skin, such as age spots. Lemon oil is also good for acne, due to its antibacterial and astringent qualities. Since it is astringent, it can improve oily skin.
Application
For general skin care, add lemon to carrier oils such as grapeseed, jojoba or another variety. For eczema and itchiness of the skin, add a few drops of lemon oil to a bath or a sponge bath. To use this essential oil for age spots, put two to three drops of lemon oil mixed with a carrier oil on your face twice a day.
