Canola oil comes from the canola plant, which was developed in Canada by crossbreeding different versions of the rapeseed plant. The seeds contain rich concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids and monounsaturated fats, both of which have demonstrated numerous health benefits.
Canola oil has a rich store of the omega-3 fatty acid alpha-linolenic acid, a type of polyunsaturated fat. Second only to flax seed, this type of fat has demonstrated numerous benefits.
ALA also exhibits strong anti-inflammatory properties. The ability to quell inflammation makes it potentially useful for treating conditions like arthritis, asthma and inflammatory bowel diseases. Inflammation has also been linked to autoimmune diseases, and Harvard Health Publications note the omega-3s found in canola oil might also benefit conditions triggered by improper immune function like eczema, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.
Other Possible Benefits
The brain holds high concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids, and they likely play an important role in promoting growth, development and mental health. The University of Maryland Medical Center reports those with diets deficient in ALA and other omega-3 fatty acids might increase their risk of suffering from depression. The center notes other potential uses include treating and preventing cancer, glaucoma, ADHD, menstrual pain, ulcers and emphysema.
Canola oil health benefits include its contribution of vitamin E to the diet. One tablespoon of canola oil contains 3.1 mg, or about 15 percent of the recommended daily value for vitamin E. Vitamin E is an antioxidant, which means it protects body cells from damage and destruction that can lead to chronic diseases.
